Start your year with SMARTER goals

Blog post by Donnie Gumble

It’s that time of year again when many of us aim to become a better version of ourselves. This year, instead of making New Year’s resolutions, use the acronym SMARTER to set realistic goals. Below is a breakdown of what that means.

  • Specific: Studies show that the more specific our goals are the more likely we are to stick with them.
  • Measurable: Giving your goal a quantitative measurement or trackable benchmarks can be helpful in assessing progress.
  • Attainable: Set yourself up for success by being realistic. Your goal should be slightly challenging, but it shouldn’t consume your life or cause unhealthy habits.
  • Relevant: Set goals that matter to you and motivate you. Do they inspire you to excel and become a better version of yourself? Do they have personal meaning to you?
  • Time-bound: Giving your goals a timeline or end date helps with keeping you on track.
  • Evaluate: Track your progress along the way. Is your current goal what you still want to achieve? Are you sliding a little and need to get back on the wagon?
  • Readjust: Take time to reflect. If you accomplished your goal, celebrate! This is a big deal. If you didn’t, what went wrong? What can you do better?

Make sure to identify your motivation for meeting all goals, understand the changes that must be made to your current lifestyle, and set a game plan for execution.
