How to properly dress for outdoor, winter runs

Blog by Exos Fitness Coach Mada Laundrie

Warm, summer runs are nowhere in sight, frosty weather is in full swing and treadmill running is getting old. As someone who was born and raised in Wisconsin and runs year-round, I am no stranger to the harsh weather conditions that winter can bring. Dressing appropriately can make a huge difference. Here are some of my favorite running accessories that have helped me stay safe and warm through winter.

  1. Dress in layers.

First up, is your base layers. It’s important to pick synthetic fabrics that are lightly insulated and moisture wicking. Your base layer should be somewhat snug to your body and long enough to cover your hips to keep your full torso warm. Your second layer should also be insulated and somewhat waterproof. This could be a vest, wind breaker, or jacket.

  1. Don’t forget about accessories.

Accessories are key to keeping the extremities warm. Nothing is worse than running with cold feet or frozen hands. My go-to winter running socks are Smartwool Crew socks. They are light-weight and made from Merino Wool that helps with temperature regulation and odor resistance.

The idea that you lose all your heat through your head is a misconception, but you do sweat, and you want to keep some of that moisture away from your scalp to keep your head warm. Look for a hat or headband that is moisture wicking and not made of wool. Although wool is warm, it can cause your head to overheat and create excess sweat.

Lastly, having a good pair of mittens or gloves is crucial. Make sure they are moisture wicking and windproof!

  1. Choose durable shoes.

Finally, when gearing up to hit the road it’s important to have a trustworthy pair of shoes. Standard running shoes are typically fine, but if you’re dealing with snow and ice you may want to take extra precautions. YAKTRAX are good when running on any ice or snow, which are traction cleats made of durable rubber that fit over your running shoe. Another option are ICEBUGS. They are actual running shoes with metal studs built in, like a track spike.
